A musical salute to the "swing" sound of the early '40s featuring a big band, fabulous singers and dancers, great songs and dazzling costumes. A retro look at the life & times of America's greatest generation. With music that combines up-tempo big band rhythms to mellow intimate ballads. Come experience the swing & rhythm of this most sentimental and romantic era.

The finest dancers and musicians of the Virginia School of the Arts and the Lynchburg Symphony share the Academy's stage with an original evening featuring a ÒmarriageÓ of music and dance like the city has not seen before. Passion inspires passion. Eclectic and energetic, Dancing with Strings and Other Things celebrates the musician and dancer - together - creating and moving to music.

The definitive Broadway musical. The backstage story of rehearsals for a new musical and a chorus girl who becomes an overnight sensation. A terrific cast of singers and dancers giving us great songs and tap dancing up a storm. This is the story of hard work, being in the right place at the right time, talent and love. Musical hits include You're Getting to Be a Habit with Me, Dames, I Know Now, We're In the Money, Lullaby of Broadway, Shuffle Off to Buffalo and Forty-Second Street.

"Bharatha Natyam" Indian Classical Dance performed by Padmarani Rasiah Cantu

Padmarani Rasiah Cantu, who hails from Sri Lanka, is a versatile dancer with an international reputation. Cantu has been a selected artist with the Virginia Commission for the Arts Tour Directory for 18 years and is the artistic director of the Fine Arts Society of Yogaville, Va., where she teaches Bharatha Natyam.

Bharatha Natyam is an ancient classical dance form of India. It is acknowledged as one of the oldest art forms in the world and has been in existence for more than 4,000 years. Born within the precincts of the temple, Bharatha Natyam uses the rich repertoire of Indian mythology as a fine medium of expression. This highly developed, stylized and sophisticated art form is performed in colorful costumes and sparkling jewelry giving aesthetic delight to art lovers around the world.

A reception will follow the concert.

Transport on a journey through the mind-body-spirit-earth holistic experience of African culture in this interactive music and dance program that engages audiences of all ages while exploring diverse cultural perspectives. Dancers, drummers, singers and masquerades focus primarily on West Africa to spur an evolving understanding of the cultural and historical underpinnings of the dance and its music while showing its relationship to the United States.

A reception will follow the performance.
